Born and raised in the Midwest, Katy graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Creative Writing. A longtime lover of fashion, she started her personal style blog, Kansas Couture, in September of 2008. Through daily outfit photos, she conveys an eclectic but accessible sense of style on a serious budget. While she currently works as a copywriter, fashion and blogging continue to gain importance in her life. When she’s not blogging, Katy can be found thrifting, watching movies and playing with her pug Igby.

Hey Ms. Kansas, I just wanted to tell you how you inspired me to start thrifting. I have always enjoyed browsing thrift stores, but never thought you could find decent, trendy clothes, then I stumbled upon your blog. I started from the beginning, after four hours I was caught up and ready to add to my wardrobe. Of course, it was the middle of a Tuesday night, so all week I anticpated my first real thrifting trip. Today I took the leap and went to a local resale shop. I'll admit I didn't think I would find much. I live in a small, rural town, and I didn't have high expectations. But I went in with an open mind. It only took about 20 minutes of digging through what was honestly crap, when I found the perfect turqoise snake skin clutch. I was amazed, my favorite color is turquise, my favorite material is snake skin, and my favorite accessory is a clutch. And in my hand I was holding all of the above. I took it to the counter to find out the price and low and behold it was $1. Thats right, one dollar. I was so excited. I found a few more great pieces (a pair of Nine West heels for another dollar!), but nothing compared to that bag. So thank you for giving me the courage to thrift with my head held high and for helping me find my great bag!

The internet is a crazy place - I stumbled across your blog while looking for t-shirt dresses and pocket tutorials, and immediately recognized the alleyway from downtown Lawrence that was on the front page. I grew up there too... I have this feeling we went to the same school at the same time or something like that. And I also have a creative writing degree, but from the University of Victoria.

Anyway, loved all the connections there, and I've really enjoyed looking through your blog. Seems like you're having some success doing what you love and living creatively, which is exciting, encouraging and truly fantastic. Best of luck! I'll continue to check out your blogging from now on as well.

Hey Katy ... what a small little world we have .... I am sitting at the computer searching for ideas for a 1960's inspired (MadMen'ish) outfit for an upcoming event and somehow I landed on your blog ...... I think it was the picture of you from Halloween . Anyway, I was immediately intrigued because I am also a Kansas City girl . I begin looking at all of your daily photos and I have to tell you that you have an amazing gift. It doesn't hurt that you are so freakin' adorable, but seriously ... the way you style and wear clothing is beautiful. You are a very talented young lady and I look forward to following your blog.

Is it weird to be the second person to comment on this same post, saying that I, too, grew up in Lawrence and immediately recognized the alley pictures? Well, this is weird then.

Glad to see that there is still plenty of style and culture there.

Hi! I love this blog. : )
i'm a kansas girl, too.
I'm from the capitol, but we have a plato's here, too and I adore it!
I adore thrifting and used to be saddened that all my outfit pieces were thrifted/garagesaled/tag sale items.
BUT now, I love the fact that everything that I wear is absolutly orginal. I look down at what I'm wearing and it all (expcet my shoes) consist of thrift store items!
Thanks for the inspiration and keep doing what your doing!!

Hi... What part of Kansas are you from? I grew up just outside of Atchison, myself, and graduated from Benedictine College there.

You are sooo fashionable! When I look at how you're doing it I can't figure it out! Is it the shirt, the scarf, the jeans, or the shoes that make the outfit stylish? When I imagine one of those things alone, they aren't that cute. Its just how you put them together. All the accessories and clothing are tied toether in one perfect outfit. You are really creative, have a good eye for fashion, and I like your sense of style. Quirky, vintage, and unique. You don't care what people think and wear your outfit proudly which is one of the things that make it all the more stylish!
